Transgender Day of Remembrance

The Transgender Day of Remembrance was founded on 20th November 1999 to mark the death of Rita Hester, an American trans woman. Since then it has developed into a global collection of vigils and events held annually to remember all those who have lost their lives due to transphobic hatred and prejudice. Each year the names of those known to have died are gathered and spoken as a symbol of our resistance to the continuation of transphobic hate crimes.

The international Transgender Day of Remembrance website http://www.transgenderdor.org lists the names of those known to have lost their lives due to transphobic hatred in the last year.

Over the last twelve months, 162 transgender people were reported to have been killed, including two trans women murdered in England within a month of each other:

Andrea Waddell
Age: 29
Location: Brighton
Date of Death: October 15, 2009

Destiny Lauren
