Transgender Equality and Rights in Scotland

Welcome to the new Scottish Transgender Alliance website.

This website is currently in the process of being developed and many further pages and pdf downloads will be appearing shortly.

This website offers guidance to service providers and employers on transgender equality issues and good practice in Scotland. It also provides information to support transgender people in understanding and accessing their human rights.

The Scottish Transgender Alliance aims to improve the lives and experiences of all transgender people living in Scotland through:

  • creating training resources
  • providing policy development guidance
  • promoting full inclusion of transgender equality and rights within wider equality initiatives (especially gender & LGBT initiatives)
  • advancing research into transgender people’s experiences
  • facilitating transgender people in Scotland to respond to consultation opportunities
  • strategically developing the capacity of transgender groups in Scotland

In Scotland the terms transgender people and trans people are used as umbrella terms which can encompass all those whose personal experience of their gender differs from the assumptions and expectations of the society they live in.

The Scottish Transgender Alliance believes that it is in the interests of all gender variant people in Scotland to come together in alliance with one another to work more effectively to eliminate discrimination and harassment. We strive for everyone in Scotland to be safe and valued whatever their gender identity and to have full freedom in their gender expression. We are an alliance of groups and individuals with many various identities, including: transsexual women, transsexual men, intersex people, androgyne people, cross-dressing people and others.

Research on Transgender Experiences in Scotland

The Scottish Transgender Alliance Development Worker carried out a national survey of transgender people during the summer of 2007. The overall aim of the research was to provide greater insight into the lives and concerns of transgender people in order to improve the services provided to them and also to inform the priorities of the work of the Scottish Transgender Alliance. The summary report of the findings is available from the downloads box on the left of this page. The full length research report providing detailed research findings across 19 specific service providers will be uploaded to the research page soon.
