Transgender Good Practice
It is only recently that any transgender people have gained legal recognition in their acquired gender role (Gender Recognition Act 2004) and legal protection in employment (Sex Discrimination (Gender Reassignment) Regulations 1999). The UK Government was required by the EU Gender Directive to implement legal protection in provision of goods, facilities and services but failed to do so by the required deadline of 21 Dec 2007. The UK Government belatedly implemented the required goods, facilities and services protection on grounds of gender reassignment with effect from 06 April 2008 in the form of the Sex Discrimination (Amendment of Legislation) Regulations 2008.
Many employers and service providers are still unclear about how to ensure that their actions support transgender people’s rights; eradicate transphobic discrimination; and advance equality for all transgender people. This section seeks to provide good practice guidance on transgender issues so that employers, service providers and transgender people can all feel confident in ensuring that transgender inclusion, equality and rights are upheld at all times.
This section of the Scottish Transgender Alliance website is still in the process of being fully uploaded and many pages of content are still to be uploaded. Please sign up to the STA Newsletter if you wish to be informed as soon as the good practice guidance is fully online.
