Our work

Our work all aims to make Scotland a better place for trans people. We strive for a world in which a person’s gender identity, gender expression or trans status or history doesn’t cause them to face discrimination or injustice.

Gender Recognition Act Reform 2022

Since 2004 the Gender Recognition Act (GRA) has allowed trans men and trans women in the UK to change the sex listed on their birth certificates to reflect their lived identity. A bill to reform the GRA passed the Scottish Parliament in December 2022, but was blocked by the UK Government in January 2023. In April 2023 the Scottish Government announced its intention to challenge this decision in court, but after a hearing in the Outer House of the Court of Session in September, the judge ruled in the UK Government’s favour, and the Scottish Government decided not to appeal this decision.

Scottish Government funded outcomes

Scottish Trans is currently funded by the Scottish Government via their Equality and Human Rights fund. The work that we are funded to do by the Scottish Government includes trans equality policy work, trans community engagement and development, including connecting trans people directly to decision-makers, and publishing research and providing accurate information about trans people’s lives and our equality and human rights.

Lots of our work involves trying to make sure that legislation proposed in the Scottish Parliament improves the lives of trans people as much as possible.

Research

We undertake and contribute to a wide variety of research into the lives and experiences of trans people in Scotland. This research shapes our work,  raises awareness of the issues affecting trans people and is used to inform policy makers.
