Email Your Representatives About the Supreme Court Decision

On April 16th, the Supreme Court issued a ruling which defines “sex” in the Equality Act 2010 as being “biological sex”. To read more about our thoughts on this ruling, see here.

Many trans people and our allies are deeply worried about the impacts this will have on our ability to access essential services, use bathrooms, go to work and go about many other aspects of daily life. Nobody yet knows exactly what the consequences of this ruling are, but we’re worried that one interpretation would require trans people being excluded from using all single sex services and spaces that align with how we live our lives. Sometimes, it may also allow us to be excluded from those services and spaces that align with our sex registered at birth as well. This would make trans people’s lives very much worse.

To make our elected representatives aware of the impact this ruling is already having on trans people and our community, we’ve set up a series of templates that you can use to email your MSPs and MP if you live in Scotland, your MP if you live in England, and your MSs and MP if you live in Wales. The Equality Act 2010 applies across Britain. We’ve also created separate templates for trans people and allies.

You can find links to these templates below, which will help your find your representatives and write to them.

We’ve written the templates to help you figure out the kind of thing you might want to say, but the more personal you make the email the more likely it is to have an impact on your representatives, as they often receive lots of similar emails like this. However, if you are sharing personal experiences with your MP/MSs/MSPs, please think about what you do or don’t feel comfortable with them or their staff knowing. Our staff can also see the content of emails that are sent.

Please do not use this email to direct abuse or threats towards your MP/MSs/MSPs or any other individual or group. Abusive emails will not be sent.

Email your MP to reject the EHRC's Code of Practice

TransActual and Trans+ Solidarity Alliance have developed a template email that you can send to your MP, encouraging them to tell the Minister for Equalities to reject the exclusionary Code and demand that any new version ensures providers can lawfully include trans people in their services.

Email your MPs about the EHRC Code of Practice Consultation

From May 20th to June 31st 2025, the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) hosted a consultation on draft changes to their Code of Practice in light of the Supreme Court ruling on the meaning of “sex” in the Equality Act (new tab). You can read all of the proposed changes here (new tab) and our full response to the consultation here (new tab).

The EHRC will now consider the responses they have recieved, and may use these to make changes to the Code. As the draft Code was focused almost exclusively on how trans people can be excluded and segregated from services and spaces, we don’t expect any positive changes to be made to provide clarity on how we can be included. Because of this, it’s vital that we continue to raise awareness about the ways that this Code is confusing and contradictory for service providers, and fundamentally impacts the privacy, dignity, and human rights of trans people.

Once the EHRC have made any changes they will submit the new Code of Practice to the UK Minister for Women and Equalities. The Minister will then consider the new Code, and whether it needs any further changes from the EHRC. If she decides that it doesn’t, she will approve it and lay it before UK Parliament. This is why even though the consultation has now closed, we strongly encourage you to email your MP and the Minister for Equalities and tell them why this Code of Practice won’t work for our community.

We’ve set up an email tool to help you easily contact them, and provided suggested text to tell them how you feel about the draft Code, the implications it might have on trans people’s access to services, and what they can do to make it right.

If you used our tool to email your MP before the 2nd June 2025 you can still use these links, as the template text for these emails focuses specifically on the EHRC consultation.
